Report: Saltspring Ecovillage Education & Development Society (SEEDS)
SEEDS is a British Columbia non-profit Society formed in late 2003 for the purpose of designing and developing an ecovillage, and to educate the public about sustainable living practices.

We are currently in the process of acquiring land for the purpose -- and are also in the process of seeking interested partners for this venture. We are forming a subsidiary BC Cooperative Association for holding the land and for managing the finances.

Our goal is to be entirely self-financed by people who will have a long term commitment to the village. Although we primarily need established folk who can contribute about half the value of the average North American suburban home, our financial model will support a limited number of less established people through loans from investor shares in the coop. This will allow those with extra money to make a reasonable return while allowing younger people to take part.

Our members have strengths in permaculture, alternative energy, healing arts, arts and crafts, design and engineering, finance, grant writing, and organizing. We govern by streamlined consensus, in which routine, non-controversial decisions are made by elected Stewards serving on a Tribal Council.

The best information is on our website, which is a collaborative authoring environment that is serving as a living blueprint for our plans. You can get a summary of many of the most important web pages by going to our Feasibility Study (draft work in progress).

We strive for radical transparency, doing essentially all our business in public.

The agenda and other details for our next meeting is always available on-line.

So if you are dreaming of escaping suburbia or the city for a sustainable, rural life-style, are realistic about the work involved, are interested in community building and strong social ties with your co-villagers, and have a bit of a nest-egg set aside for such a thing, contact me privately for details. Please include full contact information and a few words about what you would bring to such a project.
