THOUGHTS TO PONDER

Computers are useless. They can only give answers.

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.

All of us must become better informed. It is necessary for us to learn from others' mistakes. You will not live long enough to make them all yourself.

Half-truths are like half a brick-- they can be thrown farther.

The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war.

Good ideas are not adopted automatically. They must be driven into practice with courageous patience.

If you are going to sin, sin against God, not the bureaucracy. God will forgive you but the bureaucracy won't.

The only way to make a difference in the world is to put ten times as much effort into everything as anyone else thinks is reasonable. It doesn't leave any time for golf or cocktails, but it gets things done.

I am proposing simply that society should use its tools to redesign its institutions, and to operate those institutions quite differently. You can imagine all the problems. But the first and gravest problem is in the mind, screwed down by all those cultural constraints. You will not need a lot of learning to understand what I am saying: what you will need is intellectual freedom. It is a free gift for all who have the courage to accept it. Remember: our culture teaches us not intellectual courage, but intellectual conformity.

If it works, it's out of date.

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men (and women) with talent. Genius will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Nonrenewable resources should be exploited, but at a rate equal to the creation of renewable substitutes.

The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking, and thus we drift toward unparalleled catastrophe.

Why would you ever deliver bits using trucks?

"Never give a sucker an even break."

...trying to run a complex society on a single indicator like the Gross National Product is literally like trying to fly a 747 with only one gauge on the instrument panel.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature.... Life is either a daring adventure, or it is nothing at all.

Information is Power. Think For Yourself. CAUTION: proper use of the brain is not endorsed by federal governments nor huge corporations involved in serious financial profit from a brainwashed and enslaved population. Mild discomfort may occur as confusing independent thought challenges popular views of the world.

27. ... so soon as the penny jingles into the money-box, the soul flies out [of purgatory].

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

What, me worry?

It is impossible to contemplate without interest the struggles made by different nations, as they emerge from barbarism, to supply themselves with some visible symbols of thought, -- that mysterious agency by which the mind of the individual may be put in communication with the minds of a whole community. The want of such a symbol is itself the greatest impediment to the progress of civilization. For what is it but to imprison the thought, which has the elements of immortality, within the bosom of its author, or of the small circle who come in contact with him, instead of sending it abroad to give light to thousands, and to generations yet unborn! Not only is such a symbol an essential element of civilization, but it may be assumed as the very criterion of civilization; for the intellectual advancement of a people will keep pace pretty nearly with its facilities for intellectual communication.

The average potato in this country travels 741.5 miles.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

"At the beginning of this marvelous era it was natural to expect, and it was expected, that laborsaving inventions would lighten the toil and improve the condition of the laborer; that the enormous increase in the power of producing wealth would make real poverty a thing of the past..." From Progress and Poverty, To those who, seeing the vice and misery that spring from the unequal distribution of wealth and privilege, feel the possibility of a higher social state and would strive for its attainment."

If this hasn't been enough, check this out: a website just full of clever quotations!

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!"

“He that will not apply new remedies must expect new evils, for time is the greatest innovator.”

More from a man who collects thoughts

These, Gentlemen, are the opinions upon which I base my facts.

We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.

Kites rise highest against the wind - not with it.

The length of this document defends it well against the risk of its being read.
